Description
Ataköy is a small village of 700 people near to Gokova: it was part of Citlik until 1992. A referendum held in 1992 established a separate Muhtarlik and Atakoy was born. The villagers named the village Atakoy in the name of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.
Ataköy primary school was established in 1960: the school has now been converted to a local coffee house. In 1972 the local school was rebuilt.. Prior to 1960, the villagers education was based in Gokova and Çıtlık eighbouring villages. Nowadays, the education for all students from preschool to third grade education a possibility is provided. 4.-8. while students in grade levels travel by bus to Gokova Salih South Primary School. Ataköy is 30 km from the city center of Muğla, 25 km from Ula.
The villagers of Ataköy make their living through sheep farming and working the land (wheat, barley, sesame, corn), and throught the production of citrus fruits, beekeeping, and livestock.
