Artist's Description

Audubon's Oriole Back Wings by Debra Martz This Oriole is an uncommon resident for far southern Texas, so I felt fortunate to see this one near Salinenos, Texas along the Rio Grande. It is predominantly a Mexican bird and a rather secretive oriole, living in denser vegetation than most other orioles and singing from inconspicuous perches. The Audubon's Oriole is the only black-hooded New World oriole having an entirely black head and breast but not back. It was formerly known as the Black-headed Oriole. This name was changed in 1983 to Audubon's Oriole to avoid confusion with an Old World group of species in the genus Oriolus, the true orioles. Scientific name: Icterus graduacauda To bring attention to the details of the bird, I soften the blue hues of the sky.
