Austin Texas Skyline --By Doug Kreuger
My inspiration for creating this artwork came from spending time in Austin, TX, getting to know the history of the area, its many amenities, and its uniquely diversified culture.
Austin has been the capital of Texas since 1839 when it was officially chosen to replace Houston. Austin is also the fourth most populated city in the Lone Star State.
Citizens of Austin are known as Austinites---a widely diverse community made up of: government employees, college students, musicians, high-tech workers, blue-collar workers, and a vibrant LGBT community.
The Texas Star can be seen almost everywhere in Texas, adorning private homes, businesses, bridges and many public facilities. In this case, I have painted the iconic Peace Sign on top the star to salute the “peace-loving” people of this eclectic community. In fact, in 2012 the FBI ranked Austin, TX the second safest major city in the USA, furthermore, in 2017 U.S. News & World Report named Austin the best place to live in America.
The rustic-looking boards behind my skyline drawing are from discarded shipping pallets my son-in-law, Josiah Keske, salvaged to build decorative furnishings around his home. The rainbow colors present in this artwork is my way of recognizing the large number of talented artists living in this colorful area.
In the late 1800s, Austin was known as the "City of the Violet Crown" because of the colorful glow of light across the hills just after sunset. Today, many Austin businesses have adopted the term "Violet Crown" in their company's name.
The skyline view you see here was created from photos I took in 2015 while spending time at Zilker Metropolitan Park (located in south Austin) where Barton Creek flows into the Colorado River (no connection to the Grand Canyon Colorado River).
