Description
Australasian gannets (Morus serrator). Pair of gannets performing a courtship ritual. These large seabirds nest in large colonies on coastal islands. Pairs remain together over several seasons. They greet each other at the nest by performing elaborate rituals, which involves stretching their necks and bills upwards and gently tapping their bills together. They feed by plunge diving into the ocean to catch fish and squid. Photographed at Cape Kidnappers, North Island, New Zealand.
