Description
Vote recorder. Automatic vote recorder designed by American inventor, Thomas Alva Edison (1847-1931). The machine was the first invention that Edison patented and was intended to speed up the counting of votes in Congress (the USA's parliament). However, his design was rejected because politicians often used a slow vote to delay or halt the progress of a new piece of legislation. Humiliated by this experience, Edison swore never to invent anything before he had thought of a use for it. Edison went on to file a total of 1180 patents, including the first practical, electric light bulb and the gramophone.
