Sculpture - Alabaster Stone
Description
Carved by hand from pure white alabaster, "Awakening Muse" has an ethereal quality, from the serene expression on the face, to the softly translucent quality of the alabaster itself. "Awakening Muse" is a representation of creative inspiration and artistic perception. The smoothness of the human face contrasts to the roughness of the chiseled stone, symbolizing the emergence of an idea or inspiration that comes out of nowhere yet is hewn from the material world around us. The piece can be interpreted as a manifestation of the creative process itself.
Ms. Sabol carved "Awakening Muse" entirely by hand during her NPS artist residency as the Mount Rushmore National Memorial Sculptor-in-Residence. The alabaster she chose to carve was sourced directly from the Black Hills of South Dakota, giving the piece the added distinction of originating directly from the place she carved this singular sculpture.
"Awakening Muse" achieved international recognition when it was honored with Best-in-Show for Sculpture in the Devonport Arts Festival Show in Auckland, New Zealand.
The carved alabaster is mounted on a circular black wooden base. Size overall including base is 22"H x 12"W x 11"D

Great work
Lisbeth Sabol replied:
Thank you. It is such a pleasure to carve beautiful stone directly by hand, allowing the piece to slowly come to life under chisel and rasp.
