This old barn is nearing the end of its existence. Soon it will collapse into an ugly pile of scrap metal, old boards and ancient beams. To me, it's a metaphor of life. Some of us are still struggling to stay on our feet, trying to find some purpose, some reason, to still be standing. But soon, we, too, will collapse. This painting reminds us all to go through the process with dignity...and hope for something more on the other side!
This painting won a State Award in 2011 in the Wisconsin Regional Artists Association exhibit.
I am a retired pastor who has taken up acrylic painting as my retirement hobby. I've been painting seriously for the past 15 years or so, and find great relaxation and enjoyment in realistic painting, especially of God's creation and creatures. I also have a soft spot for old barns, and love to find barns that have character revealed in their structure which I try to capture in my paintings of them. I live in Southern Wisconsin, and am an avid outdoorsman, though health has restricted me from being the hunter I once was. I have won eight State Awards in the Wisconsin Regional Artists Program in the past few years, and received the Wisconsin Rural Art Award in 2018 in Madison. This piece has inspired a number of people...it won a State Award in the Wisconsin Regional Artists Exhibit, and the original was purchased by a collector in Washington, DC, who now has it hanging in his law office. Hi Mr. Stark, I am in college and was given an assignment to find an art piece that captivated me, and gave me a deeper meaning . I came across this painting and I instantly liked it. You showed nature in its form. The barn showed aging , and as it slowly dies down the nature around it is continuing to grow. Job well done and hope to see more of your work in the future :)
