Congratulations on today's sale, Robert. I find this image so powerful. My father, who lived to be 90 and would have been 100 within days, flew 31 missions over Europe out of Polebrook, England. He was part of the 8th Air Force, 351st Group, and 510th Squadron. As lead bombardier, he often flew at the request of the generals. It is possible they flew on this very plane. Thankfully my dad, an only child, returned home unscathed, married as decisively as he had enlisted, and later sold boots and hats to one of his fellow service members from Polebrook, actor Clark Gable. Seeing the action he witnessed, as you have illustrated here, helps me appreciate his character, and his long and productive life, even more. Thank you.

Robert Perry replied:

Thank you very much.

I was very pleased with your art. I framed it and gave it to a fellow Year of the Dragon person for his birthday. He seemed delighted with the gift. I'll return to check out other works by Fractalicious. Thank you!

Love this artwork…. may seem in a funny spot..but my small craftsman house is so dark. I want all who visit to see it clearly. Look forward to showing to my book club friends this week! Picture helps me to feel the coolness of a beautiful Winter night.

Artist's Description

322nd Squadron, 91st Bomb Group, 8th Air Force. This scene depicts the mission over Germany on July 28, 1944. The original target was the well protected oil refinery at Merseburg, but the target was clouded over when the group arrived. A secondary target was chosen. Just as the group passed over the Merseburg/Leipzig area hundreds of anti-aircraft guns were brought to bear on them. One fragment of flak bounced off the windscreen and another entered the cockpit, narrowly missing pilot and squadron leader, Dave Hanst, after being deflected. Other fragments knocked out the #2 engine but didn't start a fire. This was the final mission for Hanst.
