Description
In Greek mythology, a bacchante was a female follower of Bacchus - the lord of the wine. This picture is based on a Leon Bakst costume designed for the Ballet Russe in 1911. What astounds me about his work is not only how modern it was for 1911, but the easy sensuality and feeling of motion. I think today most people equate a "sensual" picture with nudity. Not Bakst. In his paintings, the women almost seem to be making love to a scarf or their clothing. He also really gives a sense of motion in a 2D painting.
