Description
Believing that America's armed forces could act against Syria's military without much negative effect, whether one day, a week, or a month from now, U.S. President headed from Washington to Sweden, and then on to St. Petersburg, for a summit of the G20 nations. For the uninitiated, the G20 represent the group of 20 countries which are the most industrialized economic powers in the world. This editorial webcomic shows a bald eagle in flight towards the nation of Syria. The Syrian army had been accused of using chemical weapons against its own people, for weeks and months prior to the overseas visit by the American commander-in-chief. Proponents of forceful action against the regime of Bashar al-Assad have been drumming up support from allies around the world, in the hopes that a punitive message could be delivered to the leader of the Alawite Arab government which has been engaged in a fight for its survival over the past 30+ months. More than 100,000 people are estimated to have been killed in the Syrian civil war which started in 2011, and the death toll is rising at a rate of thousands per months, largely unnoticed and underreported, because most of the deaths are in areas where there is no media, let alone free media. On top of that, most of the death has occurred using conventional weapons. Therefore, it is not considered news worthy by many newsroom editors. Meanwhile, President Obama remained above the fray of public scrutiny over his plans, by not revealing them, as a matter of course. Since military plans are usually classified, it will probably not be announced what the US armed forces will do, if anything, to right the wrongs of the suspected crimes against humanity which were mentioned by many European leaders, as well as NGOs like "doctors without borders". While it may not be possible to compare the Syrian civil war with such historically huge events as World War II, there are comparisons being made about how people had to struggle to survive in the war against the German Third Reich, much in the same way that people are fighting to survive the war in Syria. President Obama himself made such a comparison about the popularity and unpopularity of military action, while answering questions at a press conference in St. Petersburg, on the final day of the G20 summit.
