Barth and Livingstone's Africa. 19th-century map of the areas explored in Africa by German scholar and explorer Heinrich Barth (1821-1865) and British missionary and explorer David Livingstone (1813-1873). Barth (pink area at upper left) crossed the Sahara and explored Western Africa and the middle reaches of the Niger River in the period 1850 to 1855. Livingstone (inset at bottom) explored the Zambezi River in the period 1851 to 1856. The main map also shows his explorations in southern Africa in the 1840s. Map published in 'Petermann's Geographische Mittheilungen' (1857) by German cartographer August Heinrich Petermann (1822-1878).
