Description
The Bateleur (Terathopius ecaudatus) is an eagle measuring about 25 inches in length. The adult male has a red face, red feet, and a rufous back. Bateleurs are found in open woodlands and grasslands, in both Kenya and Tanzania, and south to South Africa. Their diet includes small animals, fish, birds, reptiles, fish, and carrion; they are known for probing tree cavities for bird nests and insects, and often rob weaver nests. Bateleurs are classified as Endangered species in much of its range, and Near Threatened over its extensive range. Environmental threats to Bateleurs include intentional poisoning by farmers, pesticides, and nest disturbance.
This endangered Bateleur perched in a tree was photographed at the Tarangire National Park, in Tanzania on 1-11-2016. I used a Nikon D810 camera body and a Nikkor 500mm f/4.0E FL ED VR2 telephoto lens to capture this image. Settings: 1/500 sec, f/6.3, ISO 640.
