To produce the images, Lichtman and his colleagues cut sections of mouse brain with the neuroanatomical version of a deli slicer. The resulting thin layers of tissue are thousandth the thickness of a human hair. Then, an electron microscope, researchers photographed each cross section, and with the computer images combine stacking one above the other. Thus, gradually taking shape a three dimensional image that scientists can explore.
