Description
I composed this watercolor of a belladonna flower, berries, and leaves on a black background based on photographs I took of belladonna plants growing in my own garden here in upstate NY. A major plant in witchcraft and a traditional ingredient in some old flying ointments, belladonna is a trickster--it's berries look enticing and taste sweet but are highly poisonous, and its flowers have a sweet smell but cause headaches. Belladonna, aka deadly nightshade, is an important plant for any witch's garden, regardless of whether the witch uses it in spellwork or not. It teaches us to be wary of appearances, but we can appreciate its beauty without being harmed by it. Many other plants grow in the garden that are more poisonous than deadly nightshade, but few have as sinister a beautiful.
