A symbol of London! The Clock Tower, the north tower of the Houses of Parliament in London, is also known as Big Ben. The nickname was first applied to the main bell of the clock (the Great Bell) but subsequently was popularly applied to the tower as well. Big Ben is the largest four-faced chiming clock in the world and the third-tallest free standing clock tower. It was built in 1858. The clock is famous for its reliability, and even chimed reliability (although the lights were darkened at night) through the Blitz of World War II. Despite its reliability, there have been malfunctions and stoppages over the years, the last one during 2007 when it was stopped for 6 weeks for maintenance. Imagine the disappointment of tourists during this time!
