While campaigning in Dallas during the 1960 presidential race, crucial information was conveyed to Kennedy and Rayburn by LBJ and an aide. Captured at what appears to be a tense moment, this photo by Peggie Mazziotta won spot news picture of the year, political category, from the University of Missouri School of Journalism.
About Mazziotta Collection
Peggie and John Mazziotta were a husband and wife team of photojournalists working for several newspapers beginning in the late 40's through the 80's, including The Dallas Times Herald, Dallas Morning News, Ft.Worth Star Telegram and the Louisville Courrier Journal. John was Chief photographer at the Times Herald during the Kennedy assassination in Dallas. Peggie was one of earliest female photographers on a major newspaper staff, beginning her career at 21yrs. of age in Ft.Worth. Soon after, she was hired by the prestigious Courrier Journal, but a year later returned to Texas to marry John, and continue working in Dallas.
