The Biltmore Estate is a historic place built by Otis Vanderbilt in the early 1900s. It is the largest privately owned home in the USA. When the family was living in it, the estate was totally self-sustaining. They grew their own food,had cattle,greenhouses and powered their own electricity. In fact, it was one of the first privately owned home to have electricity.
The estate now has a winery in what was the cow barn. The Biltmore provided dairy products to the citizens of Asheville, NC as well as using the products at the estate. Now, in the basement of the barn, lie racks of aging wine instead...
