Description
One of the most common snakes in Florida is the Southern Black Racer or Coluber constrictor priapus. It prefers leafy ground settings and eats bugs, frogs, toads, lizards and anything else it can swallow. It has venom, but it is of no danger to humans unless allergic. They are lightning fast and good at playing dead if they are cornered.
I watched this one slither a few feet in front of my chair (under the Banyan in Stuart, Florida) to this silly sea grape plant we have in the yard. Why someone planted a sea grape miles from the sea is beyond me. But, anyway, I've gotten off track. I watched it partially climb the limbs of the sea grape and then launch itself after some prey (probably a lizard. It tried several times unsuccessfully. I've never seen a snake jump!

Little did they guess what a birder and extreme naturalist you are...and what a great photographer too. ....Their loss.....

It's wild kingdom in Stuart....you could get a part time assignment with the Chamber ....if tourists who love photography only knew what you know...and where to go to find it. Ah...!!! F/L++
William Tasker replied:
I actually applied at the local Chamber after serving as an Executive Director of one up in Maine. But they must of thought I was too much of a hick. Heh.
