Compare the first print in the Black When Haitians Were Heroes in America Series to the fourth one seen here and you can see how this one stands in complete contrast to the first, while also duplicating specific features of it. Aside from rendering the same Haitian Memorial Monument from a different angle, this print is similar to the first in that it utilizes to a lesser extent a monochromatic pattern.

The most obvious departure from the first print is that the monochromatic scheme implemented here uses tints of gold rather than gradations of ebony. In addition, integrated into the portrait as a whole are dots and vertical stripes of different colors-- pale blues, yellow, pink, violet, green--to create a subdued pointillist effect.

As it used in this instance, gold symbolizes the exceptional courage and dedication demonstrated by the Haitian soldiers, now dubbed by history as the Chasseurs-Volontaires de Saint-Domingue, who fought as American allies during the Revolutionary War.
