Description
Spiracle on blacklegged tick (Ixodes scapularis). The blacklegged tick (formerly known as the deer tick) is an external parasite that attaches to a host, pierces the skin using its sharp mouthparts and feeds on the host's blood. This spiracle, or air pore, is part of the tick's respiratory system. Air diffuses into the spiracle and circulates the body in a network of tubes called tracheae. Waste gases exit the body through the spiracles. The spiracles can be opened and closed in an efficient manner to reduce water loss. These ticks are vectors of Lyme disease, which causes fever and joint inflammation. Magnification: 100x
