Blacktip reef sharks patrol their territories in coral lagoons and around the edges of reefs. They often swim in water shallow enough that they triangular, black-tipped top fin sticks out above the surface, presenting a classic image of sharks as portrayed in movies and cartoons.

They are curious about divers in their territory, but they are also wary and easily frightened. They hunt the abundance of fishes that live on the reef and try to steer clear of people.

Here in Hawaii, some families see this shark as their "aumakua" or guardian spirit, feeding them and rarely killing them.

There are a couple of these blacktip reef sharks at the Hilton Waikoloa on the side of the lagoon. They are beautiful to watch as they circle around and glide through the water. The Hilton Waikoloa is located on the Big Island of Hawaii.
