About Doris Potter
My passion is to express Nature's beauty through photography. I am self-taught and like things simple. Thus, photo manipulation is kept to a minimum. The intrinsic beauty of our natural surroundings does not need enhancing; only revealing. All photos of wildlife have been taken in the wild and involve no staging. My goal is to bring out the character of an animal ... the essence of a leaf ... the spirit of all Nature. "The Sacred is clothed in fur and feathers and scales and skin - It flashes out from shining eyes in darkened woods - And speaks in bird songs and cicada serenades - It touches a place in me where wildness dwells - A long forgotten, hidden place that shivers in sudden resonance." Arghhhh - I posted a long comment and it didn't take- You'd think I'd learn! I do post pictures to Bug Guide for them to ID, and it generally takes a couple hours to get an answer - some take a couple days, and I've stumped them a couple times on spiders but my images didn't have the type of details they needed to make a sound identification. To post pics you'd need to create an account - easy, and no one bothers you with "stuff". When someone IDs a picture they post to your image page and you get a notification that there's an update. I love Bug Guide. I have my brother and brother-in-law addicted to them, too.
Doris Potter replied:
Thanks Carol for the info and for being persistent with the comment posting. You made me laugh (sorry) because it has happened to me too. I'll create an account! It sounds like fun and I have a moth just waiting for an ID!

Great macro, Doris. My saviors often are the folks at Bug Guide and their data base. Their area of expertise is USA and Canada. http://bugguide.net I've posted spiders, bugs, grubs - anything buggy I can't ID and where I have a pretty decent picture. The guide data base is excellent, but you really need a starting place (like wood borer). V/F for this beautiful photo!
Doris Potter replied:
Thanks Carol. When you say you have posted pictures, do you mean for the people to ID? I'm glad you mentioned having a starting point because I have tried a few times to ID insects on the site and got hopelessly lost! :-) I'll keep the site as a favorite though for all the wonderful insects out there just waiting for me to photograph them! :-)

Love it great clarity , looks like a spiny wood borer same as pine sawyer, not sure thou could be wrong bodies right legs arnt ,but maybe its a male and it has red legs you know how it changes a bit if its a male vs female ? But i love your bug !!! :)
Doris Potter replied:
Thanks Kathy. You sure are on the right track. Like you say the body is right but not the legs. Maybe it is a mutant! Anyway, I love him too! :-)
