Blocks Tackles and Ropes by Barbara Griffin. The block and tackle pulley system was used by fishermen to lift or pull big heavy loads. It was often set up in fall when it was time to pull the boats out of the water and up a slipway, so that repairs could be carried out on them in the springtime. Many times coves and harbours froze over in winter or were covered with pack-ice that could very easily cause heavy damage to small wooden boats that had been left in the water over winter.
