Description
I completed this canvas soon after arriving in Graveson Provence in the south of France during one of my painting expeditions there. It is a typical Provence chair and very similar to the chairs that van Gogh painted, welcoming Gauguin to his Studio in the South at Arles, not far from here. On Vincent's chairs, were placed a book for Gauguin and tobacco and a pipe for himself. Vincent had very high regard for Gauguin, and this was his manner of indicating the esteem in which he held the Frenchman.
My chair which invites reflection about this relationship between the two painters, was created at a chalet in Graveson en Provence, during the late winter and early spring of 2004.The four months that I painted in this region introduced me to the beautiful world that Vincent inhabited, during his stay at Arles, and nearby Saint Remy. Here I felt like a pilgrim in the shadows of his great legacy....walked in his steps, painted in his shadow and to some degree, felt and sympathized with his solitary quest.
