This photograph originated from a photo, named, The Gathering, with a herd of mule deer as the focal point. Yet the landscape is beautiful and stands on its own, so I did another version, without the deer and with some blurring and painterly effects applied to make it more of an abstract.
The photo was taken in Harney County, Oregon, home to Malheur Wildlife Refuge which has over 300 species of birds and over 50 species of mammals. It is a combination of deserts, grasslands, marshes and rimrock. The Donner und Blitzen River flows north through the refuge and is irrigated out, creating an artificial wetland, of 187,000 acres, in what used to be a natural wetland. Malheur Lake is the remnant of a Pleistocene lake that is estimated to have been about 900 square miles with a depth of 35 feet. It is a beautiful area with geographical diversity and teeming with wildlife.
