Description
I was recently in Seattle and made a trip to the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks, also known as Ballard Locks. It was late in the afternoon and we watched the bridge go up on the Puget Sound end and many boats came into the lock. They closed the gate and added water to the channel until it lifted the boats to the level of the Ship Channel that goes to Lake Washington and Lake Union. Then the gates opened at the other end and the boats went out into the channel. The whole process took about an hour. I especially liked the bright green of the moss on the sides of the locks and the many different kinds of boats that were passing through.
