My goal for this painting was to depict four means of communication (assertive, passive, aggressive and passive-aggressive) and the consequences for a massage practitioner (or other bodywork professional) whom does not maintain the integrity of his or her professional boundaries through proper assertive dialogue with clients. In this image, aggressive, passive, and assertive methods of communication are shown, each with a distinct color to represent the feelings behind these methods.
Assertive behavior is represented by the color white; white is clear, pure, and conveys little or no emotion. It is clean and simple. The white (assertive) square is located in the center, around which are varying levels of boundaries (permeable, semi-permeable, and rigid). Each boundary is shown with a solid or an increasingly fractured black line to demonstrate its strength or weakness.
On either side, surrounding the assertive square will be panels of passivity and aggression.
