Description
A glimpse of gold breaks through the clouds as sunset approaches.
It is one of those unpredictable, stormy days that does not readily fall into sunny or rainy – it does a little of both, all throughout the day, and the clouds gathering and staying over the mountains portends an evening storm.
Break in the Weather invites the viewer into the high country landscape at the foot of the Blue Mountains near Dayton, WA, but it could be any such place out in the country, next to the hills. What matters is that there is space, and room – a place to walk, a place to drive, a place for one’s eyes to look over and not see a succession of houses, shopping malls, freeways, and office buildings.
As sunset approaches, a break in the clouds overhead allows a ray of golden light to shine through, and just behind the Poplar trees on the left there is a golden glow, a reminder that storms do not last forever. At some point, they exhaust themselves, the clouds empty themselves of rain, the wind ceases to blow, and the warmth of the sun casts itself over the landscape.
The fields featured in Break in the Weather used to be homesteaded by a series of families, with smaller farms sprinkled throughout. As time went on, many of the small family farms and homesteads closed down and the people moved away, but there is always a sense of the history, of the life of the people who made this their home, as one wanders through the fields and views the mountains beyond.
Break in the Weather is an invitation to visit this place of history, to experience the silence and the peace of the country, to view the expanse of sky overhead and see the storm as it approaches, as it breaks and releases its rain, and as it moves on to leave the sunshine in its wake.
