Description
Scanning electron micrograph of a spiracle, or breathing tube, on the pupal casing of a fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster (wild type Oregon R). Pupal spiracles project outward from the puparium, the grooved lining of which is just visible in the background. The anterior pair of spiracles terminate in tubelike extensions, called spiracular papillae (seen here). The exposed ends open in narrow slits, which take in air & pass it to the developing pupa. The pair of posterior spiracles do not end in extensions, but resemble a sawed off hose pipe. Magnification X1200 (at 10x8 inch size).
