Description
A Curve-Billed Thrasher bringing a nice, fat grub to the four hatchlings in the nest. This lucky shot was captured in Amarillo, Texas.
These birds (Toxostoma curvirostre) are named for the distinctive curve of the beak and the agressive, side-to-side digging motion with which they use it when searching for food. They often build their nests deep in cactus plants for protection (and it works). These parents had theirs nestled in the inner branches of a cholla cactus.
Their long, melodius songs are one of my favorite sounds in the morning. They're somewhat shy, but these parents became accustomed to me quickly and went on about the business of raising the kids.
