Description
Broad Arrow Tower was originally a key part of the medieval fortress at the Tower of London. From it, soldiers could guard the east curtain wall with their crossbows. Beginning in the 14th century, the tower formed part of the Great Wardrobe, the government department responsible for royal supplies, which were stamped with the symbol of the Broad Arrow. From Henry VIII’s reign, this tower was linked to the nearby Wardrobe Tower by a long storehouse (now demolished) and was used for the storage for royal robes and valuable furnishings.
In later years, Broad Arrow Tower became a prison and it still contains many inscriptions from prisoners that were held here in the 16th and 17th centuries. Involved in the failed Gunpowder plot, Sir Everard Digby was imprisoned here in 1605 and was then executed. He left his name carved on the wall.
