Broad bean root. Light micrograph of a transverse section through the young root of a broad bean (Vicia faba) plant. The outer epidermis is covered in root hairs. Beneath this is a large layer of cortex, consisting of parenchyma cells. At centre is the developing vascular bundle, consisting of xylem (dark brown) and phloem (brown) cells, which transport water and carbohydrates around the plant respectively. Magnification: x45 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
