Buddha Shakyamuni lived and attained enlightenment in India 2500 years ago. In this thangka, his left hand is in the position of meditative equipoise and his right hand touches the ground symbolizing his victory over interferences. He is surrounded by representations of the six perfections which are to be cultivated on the path to enlightenment — Generosity, Patience, Enthusiastic Effort, Ethical Discipline, Concentration, and Wisdom — and supported on a lion throne of fearlessness.
Leslie Rinchen-Wongmo, a Californian who has lived in many places, creates lively stitched silk images. She developed her skill in four years of apprenticeship to Tibetan craftsmen in India and is one of few non-Tibetans to have mastered their traditional textile art. Thank you all for your comments. When I look at this piece, it's almost as if it was created by someone else. Thirteen years have passed since I made it and I can no longer imagine stitching each of those little figures, one by one. It was a great gift from my teachers that I was able to do it.
