The thistle has its uses - a Scottish national symbol, beloved by insects for its nectar, and stern inventor of impromptu acupuncture sessions for unwary countryside ramblers. Bees like this one know to only mess with the soft flowers, people find out the hard way. Even those who love them rarely hug them. Invaluable to the wildlife garden though, with a spiky aesthetic.
