The Burrowing Owl (Athene cunicularia) is a small owl with long legs, short tail, long wings, and a flat head. They measure about 10 inches in length and weigh about 5 ounces. They are found in open grasslands and arid fields and nest in abandoned burrows or crevices. Burrowing Owls are often seen perched on fence posts or on the ground near their burrows. They are active during the day, but try to avoid midday heat.
This photograph of a Burrowing Owl standing on one leg was taken alongside a dirt road in the area of the Salton Sea, in southern California. I used a Nikon D80 camera body and a Nikon 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6 vr1 lens to capture this image.
