Description
💕I would love for you to view more of my bird photography, in my "Desert Birds-Arizona" Collection💕
Ah, the cactus wren (Campylorhynchus brunneicapillus), the largest wren in the United States. This State Bird of Arizona, since 1931, is one of the signature birds found in the Sonoran Desert. It's common name comes from its frequent use of saguaro and cholla cacti as nesting sites, which provide protection to both young and roosting adults.
My home is situated on an acre of natural Sonoran Desert landscape. I have the pleasure to view the cactus wren, quite prolific and ever present. Building their nests in the cholla cactus, perching on the ocotillo and other desert flora. I have to be quite stealthy to photograph their presence, as any movement, and they are off. They need to be ever vigilant, as bird of prey are often nearby.
It was a late November day, and this cactus wren had just landed in this Jumping Cholla Cactus or Chain Fruit Cholla Cactus (the chains of fruit pictured here). Looking off into the distance, it seemed to be a "Cactus Wren Deep In Thought." I enjoyed getting in close, with a shallow depth of field approach, honing in on the bird, nestled in the desert flora.

Reynold Jay
Very creative and colorful artwork! Love your galleries. Nice work. f/l FAVORITE!
Janet Marie replied:
Thank you Reynold for the generous words expressed about this. Not really so creative, as the camera does a great job of capturing what I want. I used my 300mm lens, and with shallow depth of field photography, gives a nice perspective. I don't use a photo enhancing program as I don't have any. I am delighted to hear that you love my galleries. That means a lot to me. I also am glad you like this and feel it's nice, and have chosen it as a favorite. I really appreciate it! Janet💕
Andrew Wilson
Nicely captured - looks well camouflaged!
Janet Marie replied:
Why, thank you Andrew, I really appreciate your visit and leaving such a nice comment about this. The cactus wren is aptly named, as it certainly makes good use of the Sonoran Desert cacti.

Janet, the focus and composition here is sublime. Worthy of a nature magazine for sure! And it goes hand in hand with your wonderful description and title which so eloquently personifies the wonders of our desert. Featured in Arizona!

Utterly fabulous. The detail in this is just amazing and shows off such beautiful feathers. It must be contemplating how to get out of such a thorny situation. As for me, I would be wearing battle scars if I attempted to nestle in there. Clever and beautiful birds. Great image!! Featured in American Desert Southwest. L/F too!
Janet Marie replied:
Wow, Jane, Art BUDette! Aren’t you so sweet to express such beautiful words about this piece. The Cactus Wren, our state bird is aptly named, as the Sonoran Desert cacti is home of choice. Here it has landed in a Thrasher’s nest, giving me the opportunity to photograph this moment. It was getting away from me, but it could not hide from me and my zoom lens. It was even behind a bit of creosote branch, so a “shallow depth of field” shot was in order. So glad I could pull it off. Thank you SO very much for the HOMEPAGE FEATURE in your “oh so feel good” Art Group, “AMERICAN DESERT SOUTHWEST!” I am elated to know that you feel this is utterly fabulous and great. I am honored to have that said and for my photography to be recognized in this special way. I appreciate that and also for choosing this as one of your favorites! Big hugs, Janet 💕

Ahhh, another great capture in this series! He does indeed look as if he is in deep thought....I Love it! As I've said before, you live in such a cool ( hot ) place to capture great nature photos. And as always, I love reading your descriptions. They always learn me something! Hahaha! Very nice DOF here. L/F
Janet Marie replied:
Oh Deborah! Aren’t you the sweetest thing to view so many images with such enthusiastic interest. I love the connection and appreciation. Metaphorically it is a cool and hot place to experience. The Sonoran Desert is unique and especially our region of that desert, the Arizona Upland, one of 7. I am delighted that you EnJOY my descriptions, as fellow artist Chance does too. I try to sound informative without a Wikipedia version. Actually there are more accurate websites to gain information about my area. And then share the story behind the work. Thank you for visiting and choosing this as one of your favorites too. Sending love, Janet 💕

Tsc Channa
Wow Janet , personally I would stay very far away from such cactus ,but I really admire that wren deep in thought, wow , what a daring bird. An amazing capture Janet . You definitely got the perfect timing . Awesome . L/F
Janet Marie replied:
I only am able to photograph the birds that visit my desert garden of joy (or other natural places), with either my Nikon 300mm lens or my Nikon 2000mm camera. They fly away at the least movement due to constant look out for birds of prey. But the Cholla Cactus drop their stems, and so end up on the ground, and if I pass that way, they are in my shoe. The birds that visit the Sonoran Desert, seem quite at home with the spiny cactus. That is what make it so interesting to photograph. Nature's abstract if you will. I am delighted that you like this, Tsc, and feel it's awesome and amazing. I appreciate knowing that, and for choosing this as one of your favorites too! Thank you for that!
