Calcified gallbladder, clinical specimen. The gallbladder stores the digestive fluid bile, produced by the liver. Calcification of the gallbladder (porcelain gallbladder) occurs following excessive gallstone formation (cholelithiasis). Gallstones, hard deposits formed of cholesterol and bile salts, form from an imbalance in the composition of the bile. A calcified gallbladder is usually surgically removed (cholecystectomy).
