Chapter one – Gold can glitter but it can’t sing
The day was July 27Th in the year of the Lord 1862.
.....
The widow was selling all the water soaked gear and horse off at whatever she could get before taking her only daughter back on a stage to the place they had come from. Twenty bucks, was all he paid for the lot. His Horse Blue didn't look so good back then, thin and sickly from one too many trips up north to the gold fields. Not to mention having to swim half way across the river to get out after the barge overturned with the two screaming ladies hanging on to his tail for dear life. After he saw what the horse did to save his charges he figured it was a good deal for him and it helped the women out with the few extra bucks. He thought he could get the big bay horse back to good health again. A little doctoring, some good food and a bit of time was all that was needed and time was something he had lots of.
Blue was only about 10 years old, he was a good 16 hands high and had very kind eyes. He like that and it helped that Blue took to him right away. He had found a spot about a mile up river, where the grass was lush and thick, so he made camp until the big horse fattened back up. His coat lost its shagginess and started to take on a beautiful shine with all the brushing and linseed he was giving him. Blue didn't look like the same horse after a month. He grew stronger and started to carry himself like a horse of distinction, nothing like what they had ground him down to on the gold trail.
