But you would never have known that on this snowy and very cold January day! There weren't any recent footprints in the snow so I was quite alone feeling the ghosts of the past! Cana Island lighthouse is located just north of Baileys Harbor in Door County. This lighthouse was built to replace the Baileys Harbor Lighthouse in 1869, and was first lit in 1870. Like most other lighthouses, it has a long and often colorful past. The job of lighthouse keeper was lonely and arduous, and often heroic. An informational sign on the property tells the story of one particular act of heroism: On September 29, 1919, the 300-foot-long, wooden, bulk carrier Frank O'Connor left Buffalo, New York bound for Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The vessel passed through the Straits of Mackinac on October 2, but the following day, a fire broke out in its bow. The fire destroyed the ship...
