Description
Although not a true lily, the canna plant is commonly called "lily". They gained world wide favor in Victorian gardens and at the turn of the century there were over 500 cultivars; many are now extinct. Their popularity has seen a resurgence, and new cultivars are rapidly coming to market. The canna is agriculturally important both as fodder for livestock and as a food plant (the starchy rhizome) for people. The plant fibers are used to make rope; the seeds are used for jewelry and rattles. Cannas like well-drained soil and lots of sunshine.
