I was unfamiliar with cantilever barns until I visited Cades Cove in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Cantilever barns came about in the late 19th century in the Southern Appalachian region of the United States. They are characterized by a large overhanging on the second story which makes the upper story larger than its base. What makes it even more interesting is that this barn type is found primarily in East Tennessee, with its greatest concentration being in Blount and Sevier counties. " Since the structure was not popular in other areas as well, there’s very little information about them.These barns featured and overhang for an upper loft. The lofts were used for storage of hay or other materials and the lower crib areas were where livestock was kept. This design allowed animals, which were normally outside, to stand underneath the overhang in order to get out of the sun or rain.
