Description
We’ve all heard of the gawking tourist – the country dweller who arrives in the city and leans his or her head back and back, trying to catch a glimpse of the tall buildings.
And while the tall urban super skyscrapers built by human hands are impressive, they pall, actually, in comparison to the majestic and imposing structures of nature: the canyons, the cliffs, the mountains.
One such place that inspires a sense of awe and wonder is the Canyon at Capitol Reef National Park in Utah, USA. So named because the surrounding cliffs are reminiscent of the domed buildings that many nations like to feature in their capitol cities, the landscape is quietly grand, confident in its own beauty and timelessness.
The artwork, Canyon at Capitol Reef, invites the viewer to step into this place of grandeur, this place where there are no distractions of honking horns and incessant traffic and crowds of people milling around the sidewalks. Indeed, though the area is part of a National Park, it is not necessarily crowded.
To view the vista painted in the artwork, one must first traverse a relatively difficult, challenging trail – and for many people on vacation, especially in national parks and other popular tourist spots, the idea is to get to the popular places, quickly.
There’s nothing wrong with that – the landscapes of various national parks are popular for the simple reason that they are beautiful. But when one limits oneself to the easy to access, one misses out on the unusual, the still, the quiet, the serene. Beautiful as a place may be, when it is crowded with tourists, it is difficult to see and experience.
Not so this landscape. The Canyon at Capitol Reef waits patiently for the adventurer and hiker to set foot on its paths, to stop in the stillness, and to take it all in.
(A companion piece to Canyon at Capitol Reef is Autumn on the Fremont River, also on this site.)
