Not that long ago, New York taxi's were long chunky vehicles, bright yellow and adorned a stripe of checkers. That's where the name came from. They were the symbol of NY for quite some time. But they weren't fuel efficient and weren't that great in the snow, so they were replaced by more agile cars.
