Carbon capture technology. Artwork showing a technology developed to capture and store carbon dioxide (CO2). Carbon dioxide capture and storage (CCS) is a measure designed to reduce global emissions of carbon dioxide. CCS technologies are being developed that will trap the CO2 emitted from power stations and industrial plants (upper left) and store it beneath ground (underground reservoir at lower right), potentially mitigating climate change. This process is also known as carbon sequestration. Examples of underground reservoirs into which CO2 has been injected include aquifers. An aquifer is an underground area of water-bearing permeable rock.
