Description
I'm sure I must have read about Castel Sant'Angelo somewhere before I found myself standing on the banks of the Tiber in Rome, but the information must not have stuck. Because after visiting the Vatican for the better part of a day, I looked up the river and there was this unusual round castle in the distance! I had to find out more!
It turns out Castel Sant'Angelo is more ancient than it might first appear. The outer covering is of a medieval castle once used by the Popes for protection. But the interior, the core, is far older, a second century tomb! This was once the Mausoleum of Hadrian! The ashes of the ancient emperors are long gone, but one can still walk to where they once were held in what is now a museum.
This is my take on that timeless piece of ancient Rome reflecting in the waters of the River that brought life to ancient Rome, the Tiber. I was going after a vintage feel in the color of this particular print of a Roman landmark.
