Description
Delgatie Castle stands proudly on the hill, silhouetted against the sky.An unusual place of mixed eras, the earliest castle on the site dates back to 1030 AD. Delgatie was rebuilt in the 16th century. In 1570, greater fortifications were added including 8-14 feet thick walls. The main tower dates from about 1100. Some of the rooms still have original 16-century painted ceilings - some of the finest in Scotland.
Like many castles, Delgatie is rumoured to be haunted. A number of reports of a ghostly red-haired figure, supposedly one Alexander Hay, were made by soldiers posted there during the Second World War. The castle's information boards, mostly written by the late Captain Hay who restored the house in the 1950s, recount that the ghost was first seen when a body was found bricked up in a priest hole.
Situated near Turiff in Aberdeenshire, this castle is now looked after by a trust and is a truly fascinating place to visit. (Also has a brilliant tearoom with homemade cakes!)
This image, taken from the lower car park has a textured finish to enhance the spooky feel.
