This picture was taken in September 2011 during the Rhine in Flames annual festival in Saint Goar, Germany. Directly across the Rhine river (where we're looking) is the sister town of Saint Goarshausen. These towns are right in the middle of the famous stretch of the Rhine river, the middle Rhine, where 30 castles can be seen stretching across 30 miles. These many castles were built in the middle ages by noble families, who could then lavy taxes on river barges in exchange for passage.
