Description
If you travel to Civita di Bagoregio by tour bus or private car, you may just drive through Bagnoregio and not stop. But if you come by public transport, you have the opportunity to walk the entire length of the historic town core before getting to the bridge to Civita! One of the historic buildings along this path is the Cathedral dedicated to Saints Bonaventure, Donato, and Nicola. My understanding of its history is that the church is built on the foundations of a previous one that probably dates back to 440, and in the past it was dedicated to the Madonna della Neve (Madonna of the Snows). In 1581, the bishop transferred the church of Saint Nicholas here while its previous location was being repaired. The repair work was never done so Madonna della Neve church was enlarged and reopened to the public in 1606 with the new name of San Nicola di Bari. In 1695 a violent earthquake compromised Civita di Bagnoregio and the cathedral of San Donato was transferred from Civita to the church of San Nicolas. After modernization works were completed in 1700 the new church was also consecrated to the Saint Donato. Finally, in 1779, the church was further enlarged and dedicated also to Saint Bonaventura.
