Description
Orginally built to be within a military fortress the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul house the remains of almost all the Russian Emperors and Empresses from Peter the Great, Catherine the Greant and Nicholas II and his family.
The figure of the angel serves as a weather vane, indicating the direction of the wind and is an integral part of the Petersburg skyline.
The fortress never served a direct military purpose, since no enemy made it as far as its walls. However it began to be used as a political prison and torture-chamber. Many prisoners were held, and died here over several centuries. Among those that did time here were Fiodor Dostoevsky, Maxim Gorky and Leon Trotsky.
