I was commissioned by the Punta Gorda Historic Mural Society to paint this mural depicting the History and impact of the cattle industry on Florida. The authentic 1903 street scene of Marion Ave in Punta Gorda, Florida is in black and white which shows a typical scene of the cattle being driven down Marion Ave en route to docks where they will be shipped to Cuba. As the cattle come forward they phase into full color symbolic of the horse and cattle bloodline still being encouraged today by cattlemen and the state of Florida. Also, in the top line of clouds there are the images of five popular cowhands from the 1940's.
Michael Vires was born in Lexington, Kentucky, in 1947. He had been drawing since childhood but it was during that last summer spent in his hometown, before entering the US Army in 1967, when he met Alfred Domene, a Master Portrait Painter whose studio was in Lexington, when Michael knew he wanted to be a professional artist. The figures in Mr. Domene's paintings seemed to be breathing. They went beyond realism. They were life-like. When I saw what could be done with paint and canvas, I knew then what I wanted to do with my art. Michael Vires is a self-taught painter whose experience spans over half a century.
